Title: Winchester
Post by: Zone on May 10, 2006, 07:02:05 AM
The Winchester lever action rifle is no more.
The U.S. Repeating Arms plant that has been turning out  this iconoclastic firearm for a century and a half has closed.  The only thing carrying the Winchester name in future will be a new model manufactured in Belgium and Portuagal.
That slight tremor was John Wayne, Theodore Roosevelt, Jimmy Stewart and the entire western movie genre cadre of actors turning over in their graves.
I have at least two characters that carry these things - its a style issue ;)

The Winchester Mansion (a.k.a. The Winchester Mystery House) (http://www.winchestermysteryhouse.com/) is actually 5-10 minutes from my work.

The story behind it is that the widow Sarah Winchester believed that the spirits of those slain by the Winchester rifle were after her.  So she began building on the mansion to create a place where the spirits would get lost so they couldn't get to her.

It's best to go during October for a flashlight tour in the dark.  They have a guy in a monster suit hide in different places of the house to scare people.  Pretty neat.

My girlfriend (an architect) wants to go see that place, and I have to agree. I've been dieing to see it ever since I saw a documentary on the place. Now, knowing that it's right down the street from Ingo's place, well, if we ever get out that way, I'll befinately be giving you a ring, chummer.

Oh, right.  Now I remember.  I have been there, just a different trip than I was thinking of.

Even guides still get lost in that dang place. I'd love to see it.

In addition to Ingo info, I heard Sarah thought she would never die so long as the house was incomplete, so it remained perpetually incomplete so she could avoid the other spirits.
