Title: unformatted?
Post by: AJStarhiker on November 15, 2006, 11:12:02 PM
I've got a flash drive I've been using for a lot of my current stories.  It contains the most recent, and in some cases only, files.

The problem is that I just plugged it into my computer and got a 'disk not formatted.  would you like to format it?' message.  Tried it on a second computer and got the same message.  Any advice on salvaging the files?

Yeah, a friend of mine found a recovery program.  It acknowledges the drive's presence (It's listed) but I can't any farther than that.

a lot of times when a USB drive fails, it's not a bad sector in the drive, but actually a problem with the interface. if you 'bend' the drive a bit you can get it to hit whatever connections are missing and get your data off of it.

following that, throw the drive away and go buy a new one. a gig will set you back about $20 at this point, and the data security of using a non-faulty drive will be worth it.

well, I've tried the drive on multiple computers.  I have a second flash drive, but I'd really like to get the stuff off the old one.

Maybe I should just break the casing off and see if that helps?

i can't help you recover it, but i can suggest downloading pathsync or another sync program

I use pathsync, and all it does is go through my flash drive, check to see what files are newer on the flash drive and copies them to a directory on my hard drive that is my backup

It's very useful

You have a website for that?
