Title: Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Post by: kv on December 22, 2006, 11:03:32 AM
I'm going to go see this trailer today, so I thought I would post here what I thought of it (and how hot Jessica Alba looks) later.

Actually, I liked how they did all the characters- they worried more about personality types than they did about explaining powers, so the Thing has more personality than I was expecting him to have.

One thing that's always bothered me about... the Thing... is his blind girlfriend. In a relationship where it's all about touch, wouldn't it be MORE important for the dude not to be made of stone?

*has flashbacks to Mallrats when Brodie asks Stan Lee if the Thing has a 'dork made out of orange rock'*

My only major complaint about the first one was the fact it was all on a space station, and Doom was there
oh and just general complaints about how poorly Doom was done in it
poor characterization of one of the Best comic villains ever made

Does anyone know if Galactus is going to show up at the end of this one? After all, Silver Surfer is the a Herald of Galactus, so he has to turn up sooner or later.

That was the storyline in the comics, but who knows if that's how closely it follows- they're also going with the newer silver surfer storyline, the one where he's not an alien, but some dude who for some reason became silver surfer.

Amazingly enough I've seen this trailer. I actually went to the movies on the 1st.

The look of the film appears to be much like the first and the surfer effects are pretty interesting judging by  a three minute trailer - but not being a comic geek I have to ask...isn't the surfer at least a quasi good guy?

By the way, the Fantastic Four wasn't too bad.  The only performance I thought wasn't up to par was Alba, but apparently performace was not why she was hired  :P  Chiklas, Gruffydd and whoever the hell played Torch were great.

The space station sequence only too about ten of fifteen minutes and not knowing the origins of the four, I had no problem with it.  Effects, especially for Chiklas' situation were  good.

as far as Albas performance, well she diod a good approximation of Sue for me, I mean Sue is kinda flaky at times,
the space station thing was a problem, because well they were supposed to be in a ship and hit by unexpected cosmic rays
and Dr Doom was not supposed to be up with them. his powers were supposed to be from mechanics and also mystical abilities he was trained in. He is or atleast used to be, a mystical human. not a gene altered freak. Doom should never ever be campy

Silver Surfer was originally the herald of Galactus, the world eater.
he went around and found planets for Galactus to consume. He eventually turned on Galactus and helped the FF defeat him to save the earth

rough short version anyway

In Marvle's new "Ultimate" universe, Dr. Doom, known as Victor Von Damme, was a colleague of Reed and the gang as while they were being trained and harvested by the US Government. Von Damme altered Reeds coordinates during a teleportation experiment involving a HUGE telleportation device accessing the Negative Zone and the resulting explosion not only teleported all five of then across the globe, but altered there very physical make-up, thus granting them their super powers.

Von Damme's body began to slowly consume itself, replacing the dead tissue with living steel. During this time, Von Damme used his geneous to organize a type of commune in Europe, gathering himself a group of dispossesed citizens and branding them with mind-controlling tattoos, creating his own private army. He is still a mechanical geneous, but has since begun training himself in the mystical arts as well. He no longer wears a maks or armor because he IS the mask and armor.

Isn't it fun to rewrite history??

Teleportation. Only one 'l'.

Also, genius has only one 'e'.

Still, a correct summation of the "Ultimates" Fantastic 4 Universe.

Honestly, I'm not a fan of the Ultimates universes, though. Although I do see that Stan Lee's declaration that there be only the appearance of change is still in full effect.

Now don't you think I'm a bit more qualified to spell in english than you are, ROOTless? ;)

In that case, I won't have to actually answer that, do I?

Besides, I'd argue that the 'evidence' speaks for itself.

Actually, since a language is a constantly evolving form of concept exchange, there really is no way to mispell a word, only to evolve it into something else. Adter all, we don't use "thee's" and "thou's" as forms of address anymore.

You do realize that is a book reputed to be several thousand years old, right? And Ihave to say that I have never heard anyone outside of a ren fest or shakspear play using "thee" and "thou" in general conversation.

Thee and thou used to be the informal way of addressing someone.  It's how you would've spoken to your mother of close friend, whereas if you were talking to, say, the mayor, you would address him as 'you.'

Stick around for a while, chummer, and you'll see that English isn't exactly the predominent language typed on this board. ;) Besides, you haven't met Mercy yet. He can do things with a keyboard that would make H. P, Lovecraft shudder. :mercy:

Well, not like we're much better. This is a case of the pots calling the kettles black, because I don't think there's a one of us that ROOTless hasn't corrected on some sort of grammatical or spelling error. And English isn't even his first language!

Unhelpful? Me? My dearest rigger-girl, you wound me deeply! (And I don't just mean with your crotch-ripping drones, eiather :zone:) You asked about when he's at home. As far as I know, Galactus has no home, he just roams around devourering inhabited worlds (except in one universe where he is the "Restorer of Worlds" breathing life into dieng civilizations and planets). So maybe when he does get a chance to go home, you know, once every hundred million years or so, he may well BE homer simpson. You don't know. Galactus is an imortal, invulnerable, galatic-level being.

I mean seriously, what good is it for me to hang out here if not to get short hand versions of massive amounts of geek lore?  Its not like I ever read any of this stuff.   So pony up and speak geek when I ask you to, dammit, and save me from wasting the brain cells when you've all ready gone and made the sacrifice.  Sheesh.

there isnt much else to know
I said pretty much the extent of it.
in the words of his therapist
"Galactus is just, this guy, you know?"
but seriously
he's a huge dude who uses machines to take the matter on planets (all beings included) and convert it to energy that he can "eat"

all his free time is the same as his work time
he is insatiable
he goes from world to world destroying planets to fill his belly

You know, I'd like to see Galactus in about 2 million years. You know, he's now late middle-aged. He's lost his hair, so his big hat fits a lot lower on his head. He needs glasses. And all those high-gravity planets have given him a pot belly. His heralds would al show up bitching and griping about how the planets they are about to destroy we so much better when they wer younger and the new generations just doesn't "get" the whole planet-devouring thing.

I actually saw this flick yesterday.  Nice effects.  Some funny lines.  Not being a comic geek I give it a B+ for fun and an A for nice man-arse in form fitting body suits ;D

Alba gets a D- for hideous hair though, she should never be a blonde.
