Title: New Run: Burned Out
Post by: kv on October 24, 2007, 09:36:10 PM
Hey, I'm bored to tears, and I still haven't gotten a job, and this place is my only solace.

So I'm going to start a new PBP run, and it'll be as short or as long as you guys want it to be. I need character submissions pronto- and I'd like to have at least three players, but I'll take two in a pinch.

You can post on here, PM them to me, or email them to my address, but I want to have a good idea of who is interested and who isn't by the end of the week (Saturday, my time- I'll check on Sunday, and that's when I'm going to put down the cutoff and make my decision).

The idea for the run is a high-profile group just starting out. Recruited from the best and brightest of the megacorp kiddies, national armies, and shadows, your characters are the up-and-comers.

Dazzle me, people.

I'm handing in my master thesis by the end of the month.
Until then, I do not exist.

Can applications wait until next month?

Hmmm... I'll say yes, just because I enjoy having you in my games, ROOTless.

So everyone else, you just got an extension.

I'll offer a tentative maybe.  I'm glad for the extension, though, I'll have a better handle on my time allowence after All Hallows

Well, you have until mid-november, so let me know. I've also heard from two other interested parties. The more the merrier!

Wow I'd love to play! I can turn in my character by the end of the month (maybe even week).  ;D

I'm interested... was this 4th or 3rd?  I can do either.

while we have so much time... what are people thinking of playing?

I think I'll hit up the technomancer/decker section of the book (depending on edition)

3rd Edition... so, ya know... Deckers.

Have fun, show me your character concepts, and I'll be happy- the more the merrier.

DOH!! I made up a 4th ed technomancer last night... oh well, I'll refine the backstory and use him for tabeltop eventually... sometime next century when I get to actually play with someone willing to deal with the 'trix (none of my group wants to GM with that aspect presenting a heavy showing, at least not with the right rules).

I'll dust off the SR3 book and come up with something.

2063 is the date, I'm assuming?

2063 works for me.

Oh I extra excited!  I'll see what I can do with a rigger, more towards getaway driving and such.  But who knows what will happen.  I'll kick around a few ideas and see what I come up with.

well, the proto-chracter goo in my head has solidified into something, full details are in KV's PM box, I'll post 'em up here if he decides he wants to do that.  Just can't un-post a character sheet if we decide to run with a little more secrecy within the party.

I've got sort of a layabout decker... he's run into too many barriers because of his race to get a real decent job anywhere, but he's doing as well as he can for himself, as long as the landlords will let him stay.  No major criminal connections, no corporate loyalties or hatreds either.  Mostly a blank slate as far as rep is concerned.  More backstory details as I decide to reveal them (re: make them up on the spot).

I would suggest that no one posts his or her character write-up online at all. I happen to think that PC's who have neve3r met should not know anything about one another until the time comes to find out. Now if one PC decides to confide in the others and spill his life's story, that's one thing. But as far as I am concerned, our PC's should play things a bit close to the vest. Of course, it's all really up to those playing.

Okay, so where are these characters? I've heard from a couple of you, but I would like to see all the characters submitted by... the end of this week. So, Saturday, November 10th, 2007. I'll check Sunday, my time (Pacific), and then we'll go from there.

You can PM me characters, or send them to my gmail account: l0g41n (the vowels are numbers).

Okay, one week from the time that I post this (sunday evening, my time) the call will be closed, and I'll start the run with whoever has a character in with me already.

For those of you who have already sent me a character... yippe. I'll have them and we'll hopefully be starting shortly.

For those of you who expressed an interest but haven't sent me a character yet, I'm trying to include a specific type of character for this mission: the up-and-comer. Elite, professional, and connected, I want runners that have skills and training that will make them more than equal to any task- even if they don't have the shadowrunning experience, they'll have the raw training to deal with anything. I don't care if we have 'repeat' characters, or more than one of the same archetype.

Okay? Awesome! Submit!

lol, I really need to keep up with my filing system here.  I had to hunt for 20 minutes to find the right character for this run!

found him though, Zilog is up and ready to rock.

Uhhh... technically I'm supposed to have closed recruiting and started the run, but... where is everyone? Is Thanksgiving really that big of a holiday, and I'm just missing out?

I currently have three sheets- one from Mercy, one from Gilliam, and one from ... oh, just changes for Gilliam's character (the karma stuff). I still need to see karma spending for Mercy, and I'd love to see a character from anyone else. Anyone? Apoc has offered his services as an NPC (which is awesome, and works for me) so we're putting our heads together and fixing up the run, and we'll be starting soon... I just want more people involved.

I was hoping to get something to you now that I have no game group, but with illness and the silly season, I'm so far behind with RL...

If I can get you a character I will, but all my stuff is 2nd ed.  Not sure how to go about updating...
Title: Re: New Run: Burned Out

If you want, make a character in second edition, and we'll use the rules in the back of the third edition book to update her (or him) to 3rd edition.

yeah, 'cause unlike the 3rd-4th ed conversion rules, those pages are actually worth the ink they were printed with.
Title: Re: New Run: Burned Out
Post by: kv on December 12, 2007, 12:03:06 PM
Well... they didn't feel the need to print a disclaimer in the middle that says "Don't use this conversion- it makes characters too powerful- go make characters with the underpowered 4th edition ruleset!"

Maybe I'm just all bitter at the 4th edition writers. Could be.

Character submitted to Kid Vid.

Shade in Shades is 1/4 James Bond, 1/2 Batman, and 1/2 Dwarf. He also has trouble with fractions.

He's a Infiltrator/thief. (Covert Opsy) Uses gadgets when skill won't cut it. Easygoing, smooth talking, and a generally agreeable little guy.

Shade is a dwarf, with mousy brown hair, neatly combed, and a soft manner of speaking. His skin is caucasian, but dark, as though it were tanned frequently. Not gruff or grungy like some other dwarves, he seems to try be removing all the bad dwarven stereotypes in one go. Short for Shade in Shades, he is nearly never without his trademark black visor, which, while not stylish in modern fashion, has a classic look on him. He has a datajack, like nearly everyone, as well a vehicle rig jack. On jobs, he tries to fill infiltrator roles, and he has a fair hand at lock-cracking.

Over time, you've learned that he does decent work with a pistol, and likes the finer things in life, like art, good music, and other expensive pursuits. Not for himself, though, he fences many of the things he "acquires". After being with the group for a while, he has admitted that he takes things when the opportunity presents itself, but he's getting better at it. He considers himself a romantic, and a gentleman thief. Suprisingly athletic for a dwarf, he runs and jumps well too. He dabbles in a variety of langauges, but isn't really fluent in any except English. He's mentioned that his parents work for Novatech as paperpushers, and his sister is still in school. He has kept his distance from them lately to keep him and them safer.

You know that he claims he has spent a fair some of his money fixing up a house, although you haven't seen it yet. He alternates between using a Ford Americar and a BMW Blitzen bike on jobs, and he tinkers with them occasionally. He disappeared for a short time to "go to school". He has enhanced himself in small ways, like adding taser abilities to his hands, but he dislikes overt and complete cybering, like the loss of a limb. He is jealous of magic users, and probably too curious about them too.

He's mentioned getting enough money to life out the rest of his days as he pleases, but he hasn't put a number next to that statement, yet. He's mentioned that he always thought it would be fun to try to crack a bank, if you could find one that dealt in "real money". . .

Uhhh... okay, this isn't going to work if I only have two players, and they both post on a bi-monthly schedule. So I'm thinking this game is closed/done, and I'll try again when the Pub has a little higher traffic.

Two and a half characters does not a game make.

Sorry for the late post. . .

You would be correct. I did disappear for a while. My family's compy was down. (Monitor fried a system board, and we had no replacement.)

Good news related to that: I own my own laptop now, so down time is unlikely. . .

That said, if the game starts, I could post every night.

Again, sorry for my lateness.

Mercy was really the only other one that expressed an interest before, so if he's not around (his hiatuses are unscheduled and for variable lengths), we can try and start something small- I'll write something just for the two of you.

Okay, Zone, you and Curris are the only players. Maybe you two should consult as to what characters you'll be playing, and perhaps find some balance as a team so that I can throw reasonable threats against you. ;D

Title: Re: New Run: Burned Out
Post by: Curris on March 18, 2008, 11:50:06 PM
Well, I'm open to just about any kind of character. Being a small team, I will probably try to maximize versatility. I play Mages well, and I find deckers to be spiffy. Once, I had a character who was both. I don't do so well with riggers though. . .

I think for this one, I'd like to play a magical spy type. Maybe a Physad. Depends on a lot of things. Zone, what's your style?

I think I have conversions for 2nd-3rd, so go ahead and make whatever you're most comfortable with, and I'll figure out how to make it work.

Either that, or I'll post the conversion, so you can do all the final tweaking and fine-tuning so that it actually turns out the way you want.

Curris' character is approved, so we're just waiting for the Miss Z to submit a character concept, and we'll get moving and start planning.

Just for convenience sake, I'm going to say that you two know each other, and that you've worked together before. Just so I don't have to rationalize to myself why the Johnson would pick the two of you out of a hat to work together.

Hmmm... shadowrunning pen pals.

  -kv
Title: Re: New Run: Burned Out
Post by: Curris on April 13, 2008, 11:23:40 AM
I could do the penpal thing. . .

My guy has also been falsely accused of some crimes. Perhaps your face interviewed him, if you have a  journalist type background.

He also spends a lot of time at the local university, perhaps we are classmates. . . Classmate penpals. . . On Myspace 3.0. . .

As for working relationship, my guy is sort of new to the business, so I suppose he's happy to have work in the first place, reguardless of work relationship. That said, he's easy come and easy go. He's happy to work with anyone, so long as the work gets done, or he learns something. He hasn't any racial biases, except a tad of a phobia of orks and trolls. . . But hey, they're scary as all get-up. . .

Which jobs? I suppose it would be best to play to your strengths. Simon would like infiltration runs in which stealth is a factor. Maybe sabotage, or item extraction. Personnel extraction is a bit harder, but doable. . . Simon doesn't have much computer knowledge, so hacking wouldn't be his thing. . .
Title: Re: New Run: Burned Out

*enter data*
"So? you just put data here huh?"
"yup."
"what sort of data."
"any. all."
"so, what flavors of ice cream I like?"
"Yes. although it won't help right away. you'll be surprised what several Tera-FOPS of processing power can work with."

That was it. The beginning of the end.
You see: they had talked me into a tactical computer. I was a decent tactician, and I figured it would be like a handy reference library of Sun Tzu and Patton on hand to figure out what troop movements would be best. You know, the sort of things a new lieutenant would be expected to know.
But it didn’t work that way at all.
It’s more like a simulation. Or, simulations. Rather.
You know the macho man thing? Where you size up that loud mouth in the bar, think to yourself “Yea, I could take him.”
It’s like that. Times a thousand.
The processors in the tactical computer take information. Like how much you can bench press, and what your favorite flavor of ice cream is. And it uses it to calculate how fast you can shove that pistachio nut flavored frosty treat through the eye cavity of the guy sitting across from you. What angle you should approach it from, how you should grab the hair on the back of his head to make sure he doesn’t move and break the structural integrity of your waffle cone before it’s done its dastardly deed. It runs scenarios like that by you while you sit there. And eat ice cream. with your son.
And you can’t turn it off.
It’s always picking up data.
And it knows several encyclopedias worth of stuff already.
So you don’t have to answer when it asks what the tensile strength of that rebar constructed light post is. It’ll automatically figure out how fast you could turn it into a weapon.
You just sit there and watch.
It is advantageous in a fire fight. You’ve already been practicing killing everyone in the room with every object at hand for the better part of an hour when the drek hits the proverbial fan. So you already know how to take that drek covered fan and get down and dirty in ingenious ways while everyone else is looking for cover.

Made it through some tough situations in the desert wars campaign trail.
It’s invaluable in a ‘surprise’ fight.
I was the only one to make it out of the mess hall alive one time, because I had already figured out where I would run, what utensils I would take with me, and how long it would take a flame thrower to eat through a stainless steel serving tray.
Lucky me? Think again. And again. And again.
I had to stop carrying a gun, because if I had one on me, the computer would take that into consideration, and I would have to think about shooting everyone in sight. In every way imaginable. Over and over again.
“Morning Frank.”
“Morning Phill.”
*Shoot in left eye from 45’ and an angle of offset 6.5”. use dead body as a shield. Follow up rounds to chest while sinking to floor incase he has a knife.*
“See the new AWACS setup they’ve got running?”
“Yea. Soon they won’t need solders like us any more.”
*85% probability he’s got compatible ammunition stored in a vest pocket. Make sure you feel for that as you tear his throat out with your other hand. You’ll need it to kill the re-enforcements.*
“What do you think of… you okay? You seem distracted.”
“Me? I’m okay. Just… thinking.”
*conceal movements to draw gun under your coat, and shoot through your own jacket landing rounds under the chin. Two in the chest. One in the head. Aim above the bullet proof vest that could be there. *

I did have to carry a knife though. Walking around unarmed turned me into a kleptomaniac of epic proportions. I would steal plastic knives and pick-pocket switchblades so that I could be ready to have something incase I needed to start killing people. In the movie theatre.  I wouldn’t be able to walk by the concession line without giving a preliminary ‘heft’ to guess the weight and mass of the little sign they have there telling you to buy a combo meal. More than once I had to go put it back after I’d gone half a dozen steps with it in my hand toward a big guy with his back turned. You see, if there’s a decent probability that you’d loose a fight, it tries to take the element of surprise into account, to give you an edge.

So: why Seattle? As it turns out, I don’t like killing my family and friends all day long. But for some reason I don’t feel so bad if it’s people I don’t know. And it’s hard to like anyone in Seattle. So I stay here. And if I end up killing people over and over again, at least its people that no one will miss. Hell. Perhaps it’ll even make the world a better place.

I don't know if that is the most excellent joke I've ever witnessed or if it's a character introduction, but I am both shaking with laughter and quivering in fear. I would say, I'm happy your on our side, but all in all, I think I'm going to double layer my armor anyway.

Sure. I'm in. it was just a PC idea I had. also my idea of how the tactical computer works. (other than just giving you extra combat pool for every action)
So, this is Frank. he's your standard Merc, with the knowhow to run your HMG, only instead of the traditional merc bone lacing and dermal sheath, combined with a smartlink. he's just got one hell of a tactical computer.

Welcome aboard, chummer. Agreed, that was a superb introduction.

Yup, you can throw anything at us, But all you'll get in the end is modern art. . .

Oh, got it. I still don't have a physical character for you (just an idea), and we need to figure out how the group knows each other. Or can we assume that you all just are buddies from way back?

Perhaps we all simply had contracts with the same small corp at the same time once upon a time....  That way we know each other to work with all ready

We got Zone to go 3rd, so 3rd.

Edit: Zone, that background works for me. So you guys have worked together before (more than once, but not enough that you're a well-known 'team')

Yeah, a few simple milk runs to raise awareness about each other, but nothing challenging enough to raise trust. . . Seems appropriate. Because of the unusual circumstance for which people become 'runners, I always find it unlikely that people who know each other in previous life having the same situatation (unless they're family. . . Now that's an angle. . . )

Besides, if your fixer's sliding you work, you've only got so much wiggle room to question your teammates. . .

easy enough. the idea for this guy would really only work in 3rd anyways. I haven't seen the rules for the new tactical computer in 4th.
