Title: Wanted
Post by: kv on November 09, 2007, 11:21:00 AM
I actually saw a trailer for this movie, based on the Mark Millar comic of the same name.

I'm curious if anyone had read the book, or knew of any changes to the plot.

The book came about because when Millar was a kid, his brothers teased him about reading comic books- they told him "Didn't you hear? There aren't any super heroes anymore. All the supervillains got together and wiped them out back in the seventies!"

What would a world without superheroes be? A lot like our world, actually.

The book is a great read, but a little heavy on sodomy, swearing, and violence. Not for kids. But I'm interested to see what happens. In the book, the protagonist looks a lot like Eminem. Enough that Eminem got pissed off about it, and the artist actually admitted basing the character's look off of him.

The Fox is a hot black woman in the comic, but is played by Angelina Jolie in the movie. Right sexiness, wrong race.

The protagonist's mentor is a brilliant scientist in the book, a white dude, but all of the voice-overs are done by Morgan Freeman, so I'm curious if he became the scientist.

I'm curious because there is a black character in the book based off of Morgan Freeman, named Adam-1, the very first super villain.

Anyway, I wanted to open a thread about this movie.

Dude, if you liked the trailer, go read the comic. It's a fun read. Adam West dies in it. ;D

Technically, in the Wanted storyline, Adam West really WAS Batman, but they brainwashed him and made him do that stupid show, so no one (not even him) remembers it.

Good looking black woman?  Have they never heard of Angela Bassett.  Bonus: she has talent.

Or Gina Torres.

Or Jada Pinkett Smith.

Or Vivica A. Fox.

Or, if you're really desperate, and you don't mind the fall-off in acting talent, Beyonce Knowles, Rosario Dawson, or Vanessa Williams. I'm reserving judgement until I see if Morgan Freeman is playing The Professor or Adam-One. If he's the professor, then they just switched the race roles, and it doesn't matter. Although I was excited to see a hot black woman in a leading role.

Okay, I checked IMDB to see what the deal was... and apparently purists are blasting it as 'total crap' because they got rid of some of the minor plotlines (like the villain made complete of shit- from 666 bowel movements of the most evil people that have ever lived on the face of the earth).

Apparently Morgan Freeman is taking the role of the "Professor" in the comics, but he isn't the Professor- and it looks like the larger plotline of the world being run by super villains is supposed to be the 'big reveal.'

It still looks cool to me. And they got the guy who did "Nightwatch" to direct it.

honestly I'm glad we didn't see a big pile of shit. That doesn't belong in an action flick. That needs to stay in movies like Dogma. Golgothin FTW!

Honestly, you still might see it- that would take a huge amount of rendering, and it wouldn't be the first thing done. If they stay faithful to the spirit of the comic (and I've read an interview with Mark Millar where he was talking about how pleased he was with the way the "Rooftop" scene worked out), it should be a really cool movie, if expletive and violence-filled.
