I know it's been out for a few weeks, but if you haven't seen it go see it. And if you're going to see it, see it in 3D!!! :D

I'm with you. I saw it during the Holidays in 3D and loved it. It was definitely made to watch in 3D.
I wouldn't give it a 4.8 but a solid 4 1/2 :bob:

ya see, I wasn't planning on going to see it. From the comercials the story looked like it was over done. The whole guy working for one side then winds up on the other side deal. Kinda like "The Last Samurai". But from what everyone who's seen it has told me they loved it. So, I guess I'll eventually have to give it a try.

You don't watch this for the story, it's old and done before. You go for the experience! The 3D experience, the acting, the visuals, and the attention to detail in each scene made the movie for me.

See, for me story is part and parcel - if the story sucks, the movie sucks despite the pretty pictures. I'm thinking I'll skip this one.

I went and saw it 3d, knowing nothing about the story or movie. (the wonders of not having tv)
It was great. First 10 minutes was a little disorienting, then 2.5 hours later it finished. I looked down at my watch and had nod idea that much time had passed. The story isn't weak. It's a spin on several other stories, but really there isn't anything new under the sun. (except 3d tech) It was beautiful, especially the forest scenes at night. It is worth watching in the theatre.

The movie is gorgeous, and the rain forest scenes are incredible. There are little animals that are unimportant to the plot of the movie, moving through the undergrowth of the forest. It looks incredible, and there's no reason to do it other than attention to detail.
The plot is recycled lameness, but there's more to the movie than the plot. There's pretty flying dragons, too!

Hahahaha that's actually pretty close.
Still though, it's one of those movies that's made in a way that's never been done before. It's like when Jurassic Park came out, nobody had done anything like that. People went to see the CG dinosaurs and the scenes, most people didn't know it was (loosely) based on the book. Granted I think the plot of Jurassic Park is a bit better than Avatar ;). If I knew someone who hadn't seen Avatar yet I'd go and see it again (going to a movie by yourself just isn't the same imo).

Hahaha I just found out today that the final for my English class is to watch Avatar and write a short essay on some cultural aspect of it. Like how humans are kicking the natives out to get the resources and stuff. Surprisingly almost 75% of my classmates haven't seen it.

Me niether. Not interested in Cameron's twist on PCness. I think you should write your paragraph on how the blue people are primitive screwheads that need some old fashioned civilizing ;D

I still haven't seen it either. Especially simce I heard that the current DVD version has been edited and missing scenes that was in the theater

Really? The DVD version got sanitized? That's awesome- I hadn't heard that.
I'm not the biggest fan of Cameron- I met him in person when I was running my theater, and I wasn't terribly impressed, even though my boss squealed like a fangirl when he saw him. He's a nice enough guy, and he's passionate about movies, but I'm just not that into the way he wants to sell movies- as a shared cultural experience that everyone MUST experience, and pay handsomely to do so.
My wife and Dad both liked Avatar- I wasn't a huge fan of it. It was a recycled plot (Dances with Wolves, although the thing making fun of the comparison to Pocahontas is hilarious), it had lame and cliche characters, and I saw every major plot twist coming.
I will say that it was a beautiful movie- the landscapes are fully realized, with tiny animals, variation of vegitation, none of it explained or quantified. It's just there, in breathtaking beauty. The little animals scurry through the undergrowth, part of the picture but not the story. It's very VERY pretty.
That's what I have to say about it.

I concur with Kid_Vid on this. The visual stimulation I received from the movie when I watched it in 3D when it came out was overwhelming. The luminescent landscape and such was incredible. That was it. I honestly asked the manager for a refund in which I think I gave him a mild heart attack. Apparently I was the "ONLY person on God's green Earth" (direct quote from the manager) that didn't like the movie. My uncle on the other hand, decided to shell out a hefty amount of money to watch it a total of eleven times in the theaters.
Side note: I unfortunately am now the co-owner of the DVD (my wife owns it). It was not sanitized in any way shape or form from the theater version.
