Title: Anti-Spam hiccup
Post by: Ingo Monk on April 04, 2011, 05:31:26 PM
Hello all!

As you may or may not have noticed we had a spam bot get through.  In the process of blocking that account (and subsequently deleting it) everyone got flagged as "awaiting admin approval" by the anti-spam software.  And when I say everyone, I mean everyone!

So in any case I had to edit the member list SQL table so I could once again log in, and from there I was able to (hopefully) fix it for everyone.  If you're seeing anything weird or having trouble logging in or posting let me know.

Thanks,
-Ingo

I also cleaned up a bunch of old accounts, some that haven't been accessed in 5+ years.

Here's a tidbit I just came across:  the latest registered user has an ID# of 3757.  Before I pruned the accounts we had just shy of 170 registered members.  That means we've had 3587 spambots come through here....

Wow!

Just want you to know Ingo I noticed a few of my old accounts were still on there feel free to delete those. They would be: Krazi, krazinugz, BornKrazi, Ouija, and I know for a fact Nike Shox wont be back anytime soon being she fragged a job against Wal-Mart and isn't due for release from prison anytime soon. I'll double check and make sure I didn't miss any of my old accounts.

<Edit: Just added another alias>

Ok, I can delete them if you'd like.

Also WOW!  Long time no see!

Also also: WOW!  I had ~950 rejected spam accounts waiting my attention and another ~900 spam accounts to delete that got through!  Time to add some more auto reject bans ;)

I went through and cleaned up all the spam posts, but I think I may have nuked one or two real threads in the process. If so, I apologize, and perhaps Ingo will be able to recover them?

So, do only the spambots love me now?

I'm just wondering why it was so quiet. It took me a while to decide to post it here, hence the spambot reference, so it wouldn't be strictly off-topic.

How is everyone doing?

Well quiet is good and bad, good because it means there's no spam ;)

I'm still crazy busy at work :(

Hey Ingo, you should have an ad on the pageload, so that all these spammers start making you a little extra green. :D

LOL!

You know I had thought about it once, but spambots don't click on ads so it'd just be another thing to annoy us.

Do ads only pay on click-thru? I thought there were lots of ads that paid for just displaying?

Maybe only do it on 'start new topic' pages? I dunno, it amuses me- the thought of a spammer having to sit through a commercial and earning the site money while spamming, which I then delete.

I know that's probably spam, but it amused me to have a spam comment in the anti-spam thread. :D

In other news, I think Ingo and I have worked out a system to keep the spam down. Has anyone noticed spammers? Everything looking good?

Okay, so one spammer figured out that we were using a post delay system, and some got through, but I think I cleaned them all up, and I banned the account.

Return to your regular level of inactivity!

I was curious about this.  Did we piss off Russia for some reason?  They seemed very set on throwing women at us.
