Title: Forum software upgrade
Post by: Ingo Monk on July 08, 2011, 04:40:17 PM
Just FYI to you all, been getting a lot of spambot activity as of late.  The spam countermeasures I put in place have blocked most of them, but a handful are getting through.  Thankfully part of the registration process is to activate your new account via email, so fake email accounts don't get the activation mail and thus don't become activated.

Currently we're running SMF 1.1.14, which is fully up to date as far as SMF 1.X goes.  However SMF version 2.X is out, actually it's been out for a while I think.  So I'm planning on upgrading the forum to this version as it adds a few security features.  I'll probably end up doing this sometime this weekend, so if you see a "maintenance" page that's what's going on, just check back in a little while.

Be sure to check how stable the 2.x is first, please :)

I wasn't able to do anything this past weekend (obviously :P)

Be sure to check how stable the 2.x is first, please :)

SMF 2.0 went final and was released on June 11th.  It has been in RC for over a year prior to this.  SMF claims this version is stable, and the known issues (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Known_issues#Known_issues_in_SMF_2.0_Final) page mentions nothing of any stability issues.

I'll let y'all go over that info and see if you find any issues (I'll dig a bit as well).  This is your online home too after all ;)

If ROOTless says it's good, that's good enough for me*!

(*-I am far too lazy to go look through the 'known issues' page myself)

OK!  Updated to SMF version 2.0.  Unfortunately our lovely theme got broken so I had to revert to the generic one.  I'll add some more themes shortly.  If you find anything funky let me know!

Just please promise me this theme isn't a permanent fixture!

Hahaha I hear ya!  I've actually installed a couple of themes already, and you can pick whichever one you'd like by going to your profile, then "modify profile" then "look and layout".  There's also more themes at http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/ (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/), if you find anything there you like let me know in a PM and I'll download and install it.  They're generally around 200kb-500kb, so not that big of a deal to install several.

I think I'm going to set "Black Rain" as the default theme.  That's the one we had previously as default so I got the newer version of it.  I'll have to tweak it a bit to try and match our old theme however.

UPDATE:
Kinda fixed, though with this theme the link colors are orange instead of blue.  I'll leave it for now I guess unless it really bothers people...

Well that sucked!  The host upgraded the server our site is on, but our forum database didn't get migrated fully.  Actually, only an old backup of the database got migrated.  Finally got the restore done and here we are!

The good news is that I haven't had a single spambot try and register since the upgrade ;)

Very nice... very... orange.

I was quite distressed to have the forums disappear on me, and I'm very happy to have them back. :D
