Title: Shadowrun Returns
Post by: kv on April 04, 2012, 11:16:25 AM
Hey, I don't know if any of you run in the kickstarter circles, but I came across this, and it was just too awesome not to share:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1613260297/shadowrun-returns

Jordan Wiesman is looking to fund a new Shadowrun game. :O

No comments? I thought that was the most awesome thing ever!

And since they totally funded it in one day- its a definite thing. If you donate $60 or more, you get a docwagon card to carry around (as well as one in-game).

Anything?

$60 for a docwagon card? Is this a kickstarted software program, or a pen and paper game?

Okay, I paid the $66 bucks to get some L0075 and help realize the dream of a turn-based videogame without DRM, and a cool book thing, and a t-shirt, and a pony... and oh, wait... maybe some of that is made up. *shrug* but I chipped in nonetheless and donated my videogame money for this month to them.

Yeah it looks awesome!  Love the fact that the people developing it are Shadowrunners (the people who developed the rpg we all love)  I'll be supporting them as well.

$700,000 and counting!

I'm going to contribute my $60, and put my DocWagon card in my wallet. :)

My brother(s) and I have been contributing to this project- my brother (DaveofDeth) convinced me to upgrade to the $125 mark, where you get the game, the hardcover book, gold docwagon card... and, most importantly, Shadowrun dogtags.

More good news- the project has raised $1.2 million ($1,263,845 as of the time of this posting), and Weismann dropped some more good news on us:

Quote from: Jordan Weisman, Kickstarter 'Shadowrun Returns' page
Last week we announced that if our funding hit $1.5m, we’ll create a special story, just for backers, that connects the plots in the SNES and Sega Shadowrun games. It’s our way of saying thank you for all your support. Your reaction was immediate, passionate, and inspiring.

It seems like everyone is really excited about the mission (we are too!), but an overwhelming number of you don’t want that the mission to be exclusive for backers. You want everyone who loves Shadowrun to be able to experience it.

That’s awesome.

Your generosity of spirit and your support for people who aren’t (yet, we hope) involved in this Kickstarter really says something important about the Shadowrun Community and we’re proud to be a part of it. But we still want to say “thank you” to everyone supporting the project and putting their faith in us.

So here’s what we’re going to do: If we’re lucky enough to get to $1.5m, we’ll create that story and make it available only to backers but for an exclusive period of time. Then, we’ll open it up so that everyone can see how the dots between Jake and Harlequin are connected.

Everybody plays. Everybody wins. Everybody calls DocWagon.

You people are incredible. As of this writing, we have well over 6,000 posts on our Kickstarter page alone. Add to that the thousands more on Reddit, Dumpshock, Facebook, the comments pages of sites hosting articles about the project, and the gazillion private messages and emails we receive and one thing is clear—people are talking about Shadowrun Returns.

Back when Jordan first created Shadowrun, this sort of community interaction just wasn’t possible. The best way (it felt like the only way) to communicate with fans was in person at game conventions. Not a very efficient method, but a fun one! Happily, the Digital Age is upon us and we feel very lucky to have the ability to read your comments, listen to your debates, and write blog posts like these.

As we look across all the myriad websites and forums, it’s become quite apparent that this community needs a place of its own: a Shadowrun Universe website.

One place where fans of every aspect of Shadowrun (remember the collectible card game?) come together to learn, to express themselves, and to have fun.
One place where everyone we can share a love of Shadowrun: forums, fiction, art, videos, news . . . everything.
One place where we can check in with you.

So, in that spirit of community, we’ve teamed up with our friends at Cliffhanger Productions, who are developing Shadowrun Online and with Catalyst Game Labs, the producers of the Shadowrun tabletop game, to make this a reality.

Just to be clear: we are not going to use any of the Shadowrun Returns Kickstarter money to fund the Shadowrun Universe website.

Our Kickstarter project is about creating a new Shadowrun game with your generous support. The Shadowrun Universe website is about all of us revitalizing and re-energizing a game setting that we’ve loved for years.

More on this later when we’ve worked through the details. For now, back to crunching!

Thanks again! You make this worth doing!

HBS

Hope y'all have a wonderful day!

I remember the card game!  I actually still have my cards... somewhere.  I remember I had taken a bunch out and was going to use them as a "random encounter generator."  Essentially pick a card from the deck, and that thing happens.  One of my favorites was "Green Apple Quickstep" which essentially is... well... diarrhea.   bahahaha! ;D

Just four days left in the fundraising... deadline? Timeline? Event?

I don't know what it's called, but I'm excited to have a new Shadowrun video game in the pipeline! And I'm incredibly excited for all the custom content that's going to be generated by the community of fans out there, and I'm a little bit extra excited for the cool swag. :D

Please, tell your old gaming groups, friends, and post your facebook status to "Shadowrun is awesome!" So that everyone knows about this game. :D

If you read the comments on the page, most of the people there are talking about the console games.  I haven't read any comments relating to the RPG in any edition really.
Title: Re: Shadowrun Returns
Post by: kv on April 27, 2012, 10:38:11 AM
No, they made it pretty clear fairly early on that they were supporting the storyline and feeling of Shadowrun more than any one actual ruleset, although they also said they'd be more 'inspired' by 2nd/3rd edition rules than the current 4th edition ones.

I'll be honest, I never played either one of the older Shadowrun video games. I bought the Xbox one to show solidarity, and my youngest brother got really really good at it (he does that), but it never amounted to much, because even though we had multiple computers and gaming consoles, I couldn't bring myself to shell out $75/per, and by the time the price came down, Windows had dropped the servers. I still have three or four copies, but they're scattered.

Anyway, I'm mostly excited for a Shadowrun game where I get to hire and run my own team, and make runs that other people can play. Also, I'm excited to make every run I plan a DOUBLE-CROSS! Seriously, it needs to happen more, and I'm going to have fun making multiple versions of the same run with different endings. Maybe just two versions, so people have to guess. :D

All the swag is cool, but I'm not worried about it.

deckers vs. hackers and drek/hoop vs actual profanity; the differences there are minute, you can get a good dystopian vibe going either way.
I'm interested to see if they use the wireless hacking world over the older fibreoptic standards used in 2nd and 3rd. (I actually really like the wireless world).
Title: Re: Shadowrun Returns
Post by: Ingo Monk on April 27, 2012, 04:27:29 PM
I've played both the Sega Genesis and SNES versions.  If you still haven't played them, you can easily download emulators on your PC then locate the ROM files to play the games.  It's kinda weird playing on a keyboard, but you could get a USB controller for around $15-20 if you really wanted.  Message me if you want more details, I got to play a bunch of games I never would have as a kid this way.  I even got to play fan ports of games never released in the US.  Technically it's illegal to have a ROM of a game when you don't own a physical copy of the game, but if they don't sell the game or console anymore would anyone really get bothered?

The SNES one had a great story.  It totally gave the impression of a dystopian future, but didn't follow the game rules very much (though it did keep within the spirit of the game).  You're trying to figure out why the heck you woke up in a morgue, and why you can't remember anything.  As you play you figure out the keyword system, where you learn new keywords and you can go back to previous people and ask them about it.  I really liked this system, it draws you in more as you find out more.  The thing I really didn't like about it was how there were no archetypes, you play the same type of guy no matter what, and that you can max out cyber and magic on the same guy.  Like I said, not following the rules per say but in the spirit of SR.  Anyone playing the game but never playing the table top RPG wouldn't be the wiser anyway ;)

That being said I prefer the Sega one over the SNES one.  The matrix offered more immersion and the game followed SR2 more closely as far as rules and such went.  It had magic (which caused drain), customizable weapons, contacts, and Mr. Johnsons that gave you runs.  On top of that it had an underlying story that came out in the open as you progressed.  This will always hold a place in my heart, as it was the game that introduced me to SR.  One summer in the mid 90's me, my bro, and our friend played this game nonstop.  We played it every which way we could, using all 3 of the starting archetypes, and finding all the secrets and Easter eggs we could.  It got to a point we copied the character sheet and made up our own rules to play it like D&D.  It made no sense, but it was extremely fun.  Then one day I wander into EB (do you remember Electronics Boutique, which became EBGames, which then got bought by Game Stop?) and low and behold they had a book with "Shadowrun" on the cover.  I'm thinking "what the heck is this?  I want it!" so I bought it.  It was the SR2 rule book  ;D

Le sigh, memories  :D

heheh, the very first RPG book i bought was shadowrun.. had played some starwars (WEG edition) and dnd, but Shadowrun is the one that got me hooked.

It took forever to get a game going, but that first game was with Good Ole Capt, and rest is history.

If possible.. We SOOO need to get an actual "Pub" set up in this game for all the regulars here.

so it should be possible to set up an ftp file host for pub inspired runs, to share with our fellow rpg nuts.
hell, we could even have a pub-crawl, where we link them together, or vote on our favorites.

For the sake of completeness, Shadowrun Returns finished it's Kickstarter run with $1,836,447

That doesn't include the $52,969 from Paypal, which puts the grand total at: $1,889,416.

They also had 36,276 backers, which I think is an impressive number. :D

I'll include more information here as I get it.

If they had secured funding the traditional way (if they even could find a company to put up the dough), then sold the title normally afterwards, 36,276 people at $50 per person would equal $1,813,800.... which is essentially almost the same amount?  Pretty interesting how that worked out, isn't it?  Makes you wonder about how some organizations/groups are selling products with the "pay what you feel is fair" mentality (I've seen a few music groups sell albums this way), with the above evidence it tends to make me think it'll work out the same.

Things that make you go "Hmmm.." :bob:

Speaking of things that make you go 'hmmm...' I was just perusing over at Shadowrun.com, the Shadowrun Universe thing they set up when it became apparent that there are a lot of nerds who love Shadowrun.

I registered there, and I was curious if anyone else had done the same. I don't want to draw people away from the Pub, but I did register my group as "Shadowrun Pubbers". If you enter that as your ' runner team' affiliation, it'll list all us Pubbers together.

Just a thought.

Everyone is suggesting their hometown, or off-the-wall suggestions; people seem to be serious about a few choices:

Neo-Tokyo
Portland
Dublin
London
Berlin (this one would be my choice)
Singapore
Denver
Chicago
Tenochtitlan
...someplace in Brazil.
...someplace in South Africa.
Space.

I'm a fan of Germany, because it gives the international fans something to love, and it gets us out of the UCAS, and it gives us access to the Anarchist movement as well as Lowfyr's backyard. Dublin would be my second choice, followed by Chicago. I know Chicago is in the UCAS, but how could you pass up the chance to play in Bug City?

Post by: kv on May 10, 2012, 05:27:34 PM
I'm divided; I really wanted them to use Germany (yay Anarchist's Berlin!).

But the option for more Seattle intruiges me. I mean, I thought we were already getting 'more Seattle,' since we hit the $800K mark, but if they wanted to DOUBLE the amount of time you could spend in Seattle, I would be tempted. I don't mean, 'there are now twelve areas'- I mean that if originally you could spend 20 hours slogging through Seattle's dark streets and now you can spend 40 hours doing so; that would be kind of awesome.

I'll have to go check the forums and see what they're saying. I'm probably going to vote Berlin.

Title: Re: Shadowrun Returns
Post by: kv on May 11, 2012, 11:09:01 AM
Yeah, I think about half the people who were suggesting places just wanted to see Shadowrun in their hometown/place they grew up in. Like, I don't think there's a lot of call for Shadowruns in Bangaladore, but Andrek from the Shadowrun.com forums was very vocal that it was the perfect place to have the game set.

Not that the people originally writing the game were any better- the bomb that created the 'Shattergraves' in Chicago would have taken out the FASA offices (or so I've heard); and then they had that whole Bug City thing.

Personally, I chose Germany because I think there's a huge fanbase in Germany and they deserve some love and recognition; and I think Anarchist Berlin is cool. Also, Lowfyr can make an appearance, because those are his stomping grounds.

My second choice would have been more Seattle, but I waited a few hours, and didn't see any reply from HBS about my question (how much more is 'more Seattle'), so I went with Germany.

Data Search critical success:

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=1100+W+Cermak+Road+Chicago,+IL&hl=en&ll=41.853148,-87.65318&spn=0.003213,0.005729&sll=41.852777,-87.650825&sspn=0.003213,0.005729&t=h&hnear=1100+W+Cermak+Rd,+Chicago,+Illinois+60608&z=18

That's the building where FASA had their offices.  Office B305, employees # between 5-10, estimated annual revenue of $500,000, and the phone number was (312) 243-5660.  It's amazing what you can find on the...pre matrix?  Some websites act as if the company is still active since they probably didn't receive any notification that it wasn't.

Also, I voted Germany :)
Title: Re: Shadowrun Returns
Post by: kv on May 17, 2012, 11:10:51 AM
Since there was less than a 1% difference between the two leaders (Berlin and Hong Kong), they instituted a run-off!

So you get to vote again, now between one of the two favorites. Ruski seemed to think this was a stupid idea, but I think it's cool.

  -kv
Title: Re: Shadowrun Returns

mathmatically; it's stupid. but I'll be voting for Germany again when I get my survey all the same.
Title: Re: Shadowrun Returns
Post by: Ingo Monk on May 17, 2012, 12:27:53 PM
Yeah, the people who voted for either one will probably vote the same.  However the people who voted for other places become the swing vote since they'll have to pick HK or Berlin.
Title: Re: Shadowrun Returns
Post by: Ruski on May 17, 2012, 01:13:24 PM
if there wasn't a big mathmatical difference (~1% or less) between the two leaders, will the addition of the other votes be that much different? my guess: round 2 finds a winer by... wait for it...  wait for it... about 1%! yaaaay!
and maybe they say something pretty like: "we can't choose either, so we will do both!" and let that be a PR angle. or maybe I'm wrong, and the run off will see a good tie-breaking difference?
my guess: if they wanted to find a majority, and one vote made the difference, then thats the winning vote.
a re-match; ... i dunno, just dosen't seem to add a lot of value.
are they going to have a third run-off with just one choice so everyone can say: I voted for the winner! because giving additional value to the people who voted "wrong" is kinda a loosing slide, if ya get what I'm saying.
Title: Re: Shadowrun Returns
Post by: Ingo Monk on May 17, 2012, 04:05:26 PM
I think it'll matter.

There's 36000+ backers, so potentially there's 36,000+ votes.  So if Berlin & HK are within 1%, we don't know if that's 21% & 20% of the total, or 31 & 30%, etc.  However, making estimates based on the picture they provided in Update #17, I did a breakdown like this:

Berlin   3200 (21.4%)
Chicago   1700 (11.4%)
Denver   1950 (13%)
Hong Kong   3300 (22.1%)
London   2200 (14.7%)
Seattle   2600 (17.4%)

Total: 14950

So Berlin was at 21.4% and HK was at 22 %.  If you were to continue the assumption based on 21 & 22 % of the votes then Berlin would have received around 7600 and HK would have been around 7900.  Together that's 15k+.  Not even half of all voters.  That leaves around 20k+ people still to vote on these 2.

It would be easy to assume that the split would be the same, although it could easily not be the case.  What if the second time around someone votes for HK instead of Berlin?  Are the backers going to vote for whichever is closer to home, or one they want to see?

Personally I think it'll be close, but not close enough to hide a clear winner.  From what I'm reading most people seem to prefer Berlin, a general consensus feeling that HK is too rich or too involved to be lightly covered by the game and would cheapen the feel.

Looked at the art, definitely cool.  Not a big fan of the stylized "WoW" art as people are calling it.  It looks cool and all, but not very dangerous.

Also, while reading through the comments I've come across many instances of my SR pet peeve: When people write "ShadowRun"

I have never seen an official SR logo written that way.

Not based on SR, it was a strait-to-dvd movie released in the UK in 1998.  Due to that status I'd imagine exposure would be limited, and I don't understand how this could be the source since it's not based on the SR universe.

Both 1st and 2nd editions used the Shadowrun logo over a ram's skull that we remember.  There is no more emphasis on the R than any other letter.  Both SNES and Sega Genesis video games used the same logo as SR1/SR2 books had.  We probably remember SR3's logo, and now SR4's logo, neither of which put any more emphasis on the R than any other letter.  So why do people insist on "ShadowRun"?  I understand it's a compound of 2 words, but we don't write "ConJunction" or "FootBall" or "BlackBoard".

Where the heck does it come from?

I don't know why it bothers me so much!

This is thread necromancy, but I don't care, because this thread has a shiny new topic all to itself, and I'm excited.

Here's the alpha gameplay video, hot off the metaphorical presses:

And, if you hadn't heard, they decided to work extra-hard to include matrox runs in the gameplay:

Awesome!

I think it partially because people are referring to it as SR in shorthand or abbreviated form.  I mean I know I do but I am looking forward to Shadowrun Returns I am hoping to have a little money to buy it when it comes out.  I was also excited to hear that there was going to be a Map Editor for the game.  So Kid we going to get a special Shadowrun Returns Game of our own?

I will make many runs.  This will be the salve to my not-playing-SR-for-a-very-long-time open wound!

Tutorials for making your own runs have started started showing up on youtube, so you can get a preview of what it will be like once you pick up the game at the end of June!

I was chatting with email about something with one of the Shadowrun-Returns staff, and she assured me that they're on target for a June release still, which means soon!

Welcome, Thanatos!

Yeah, I was emailing Harebrained about the early release of the toolset (which I, sadly, did not get access to), and they said that they were planning a June release, and then four days later the official announcement came down that they were releasing July 25th.

I'm looking forward to it!

My brothers and I were backers, so we've been eagerly anticipating the game for a while now- I've been playing it every night for way too long after work, and I have to say I'm really amazingly happy with it. I'm enjoying the single-player campaign, I love the plot, and I'm looking forward to trying out the editor after I finish with the campaign.

I'll be making Back to the Shack as my test module, and then working on a campaign.

Just a thought, but should we create a Steam Group for the Shadowrun pub? It would make it a little easier to keep track of any campaigns made by the group, and we can suggest and review the works of others on there?

Sound like a good plan?

Already done (weeks ago actually).  Add me on steam and I'll add you to the group.

In other news I'm on my second play through of SR:R.  First play through was with a mage, this time around I'm a samurai.  It seems like playing a mage makes the game harder, this time around I'm not having that tough of a time.  It could be because I know what to expect now however...

I heard that Mages with the Blind spell make the game easier, if that helps.

I just finished my first playthrough tonight, actually. Yay!

I'll go find me some Ingo on steam!
And seriously, that content editor is not messing around!

What am I, a commodity now?  Hahaha

Ya no joke, talk about robust!  I haven't played with it too much, but the level design is pretty strait-forward.  Figuring out event triggers now.  I should probably go look at their tutorials huh?

I figured, I've done Neverwinter nights modding, even built my own campaigns and adventures; so I opened up their level for Pike Place s comparison- and damn, did they spend some hours making that place!

The tutorials I've see have all been really good. Now I just need to go back and learn everything and start working.

Okay, so second attempt not quite as intimidating, although I will get sucked into this forever.

Here's a screen capture!

Now I need to learn how to program doors, and make shelves work! Also, combat and all that stuff.

I still need to figure out how to put 14 aisles of shelving in there (I didn't find any suitable shelves in the toolset, so I'll have to go over it again, and maybe figure out how to create my own), and then set up conversations and encounters- boom, Back to the Shack!

I've made (more) progress on my Stuffer Shack. They updated the editor, so you don't have to do the hack walkaround to get custom items into the game; so I re-entered my shelves, and added a StarKaf logo to celebrate (It's not just soykaf, it's StarKaf.).

Right now my game is crashing whenever I try and test the module, though... which worries me. Anyone else having problems, or did I break something?

This is version 0.5 of the Stuffer Shack! Map layout is complete (as you can probably see), and I'm already working on actors and scripts, conversations and cool extras. If you'd like a copy, PM me your email address, and I'll email you the zip.

I have sent Ingo a friend request so hopefully I shall be able to join the mighty pub group soon.  I hope to have the game in about a month but I doubt I will have time to delve very deeply into the map generator.
