well, originally, it was just a name i used for a charichter in an example story for my brother, to explaine how the matrx worked, and how to run someone through a computer system. he liked the name though, and so when he made his first decker, he kept the nick, and kind of made the charichter arround that ideal.

Yeah, I liked the character idea, and like most of those example stories, we ended up writing the characters into something bigger.

Now he's almost totally fleshed out, with a full backstory and everything.

Yup. he started out as a low end decker (like my first non-archtype decker 101) who didn't know anything about computers, and was learning as we the audiance followed allong. then he was kinda a low end quirkie and fun guy, then, one time we were going to game, and kid wanted to play a decker, but didn't have time to roll one up, so he used kidvid, and then everyone liked him, etc. etc ... etc...

So... excuse me for being a bit slow tonight, but where did the name 'Kid Vid' come from?  Something to do with watching lots of TV?

a cartoon charichter from a burgerking commercial that was geeky and slightly cool.

At the time, I was living in another country (Australia), and Ruski and I had been writing back and forth about Shadowrun for a while (the better part of two years).

There are some other cool examples he used- Samin, the street sam, also became one of the characters in the run we wrote (the part of the team that Kid Vid was part of). Doorknob, the troll. M&M, (aka Mysterio the Mysterious)

it was fun.

Using names from something else is always fun for character creation

Maxell: Rigger who would always use incredibly high volume music in his vehicles. Trouble was, he would always turn up the volume too high for those without Dampening cyberware. Based off those old Maxell Commercials with the guy in the chair.

Sunkist: Female Elf Sun Shaman, would always wear bright orange and yellow, liked attention and the beach. Based on Sunkist Soda

Uniden: Electronics whiz, could whip up any kind of useful electronic security measure/countermeasure. Well-known for his mad-bomber skills and reckless abandon. Based off the phone on my desk.

Demand: "The Face" well known for his demanding personality, he used to be a trial Lawyer in the CAS before his license was revoked at the whim of Texas Oil Baron. Based on the "Demand For Possession Non-payment of Rent" form also on my desk.

Fmr. Lt. Wilkes-Mason "WM" : Is the former UCAS Lieutenant who was dishonorably discharged for finding his CO having an affair with someone other than his wife. Often nicknamed "Waste Management" Based off the Waste Management Fridge Magnet holding up some papers in my office.

Is it a coincidence that all of those inspirations came from things you could see from your desk? ;D ;D ;D

I had a real problem with players not being able to name characters- so I would have them flip open the phone book, and make up a name based on the word they pointed to on a random page.

Works wonders. Even if they can't think of a name, they'll find something if they accidently point to Angus McWienerLikker. ;D ;D ;D Unless they're Gabe. ;D

I found a couple of old baby name books at a bag sale (when the library has a cleanout and you can pick up a shopping bag full of used books for 3$)

These are unbelievably handy for both character creation and for of the cuff NPC names.  They are why we had two bad guy brothers names Cosmo and Liam - just flip and point :)  It also helps that one of them is the New Age name book.

I also have picked up names for characters from history books, and randomly playing with euphoneus sylables until they came out the way I liked.

We had one character pick up the nic Headshot, simply because he kept catching bullets with his cranium and living to tell the tale.  We finally bought him a helmet after the third time - we figured no string of luck would last longer. His 'real' name had been Bob.

HAHAHAHAHAHAA... you know you're the second tring runners when you get hired in the same team as THAT guy.

"Wait, aren't you the guy who gets shot in the head all the time? Why am I here? I'm not a screw-up!"

That's why we have a rule that no one gets to enter the game with a newbie character who all ready has a nic.  You gatta earn any street name in our universe.
That's why there are actually three two people in the world who knows Zone's given name.

Deckers got it easy when it comes to nicks... it comes with having to build an online persona in the first place... so most every decker get's to pick their own streetname.
but if it sticks or not on the cold city streets is another matter...
