Akira Kurosawa
« on: May 06, 2006, 05:07:55 PM »

A friend of mine let me borrow a box set by Akira Kurosawa. All these movies were done in the 50's and are black and white. I'm probably behind the times compared to you guys woith his movies, but wow. Talk about good stuff. So far I've seen Sanjuro and The Seven Samurai whic is what the magnificent 7 was based off of. The next one I'm gonna watch is The Hidden Fortress. I totally recomend anything he's done to anyone who hasn't seen these. Especially if you like Samurai movies.

That's the first box in a series of several.
So far I've been able to find 3, I think that's the ones that've been released yet.

Yeah, I've been seeing quite a few older samurai movies- and they're really really good. I can't say that about old kung fu movies, which have the special effects buget of my playing around with a camera in the back yard with my brothers.

For example: "The flying guiottine!"

But I am impressed at some of those storylines, so I'll look into this guy.

One of the things I rather like about some of these movie (especially the samurai ones), he tends to use actors that can actually fight/fence for his fighters.

Did you lot ever look at the fencing techniques in Highlander?
They're attrocious!
Same goes for most things that came out of hollywood (and europe, but they usually contained less action by far) for years and years, until somewhere in the 90' I think, and even after that it was not a garanteed thing.

But most of kurosawa's fighters actually know what they're doing (atleast if they're supposed to), which is really nice if you know enough martial arts to notice.

And I do suspect that one of the guys in the Seven Samurai is using the same ryu that I'm practicing. ;)

Everything Akira Kurosawa has created > Life itself. . .
