Shadowrun... the game.
« on: May 09, 2006, 06:11:33 PM »

Hey everyone. I checked a news site, and someone was already complaining about this thing.

I checked it out, and the original fanboy reaction (game equivalent of a knee-jerk reaction) is almost totally negative.

I posted some, telling people 'wait and see,' just like I advised with 4th Edition, but I thought you should all be privy to the site.

Thanx for the warning. Has anyone been offered any contracts on any of these people yet?

An FPS, huh? Personally, I would have prefered a MMORPG, but then, I don't play those, so what do I know??? ;)

Sounds interesting.  I'd consider getting a 360 for this, assuming the game's worth it.

Well, the good news is, it's shadowrun.

Bad news is, it's a halo-esqe team shooter, using ressurection magic and teleportation.

Oh, and Immortal Elves are mentioned in the storyline. Sorry Gabe.

I'm just happy because they're doing it by using a remote location where the effects won't change the SR storyline by large.

You know, hearing about the ressurection and teleportation, I'm not even going to look at the screen shots for this. Frag 'em. If they want ressurection and teleportation, go play everquest/warcraft/etc.

Well, there are a horde of people saying that the only way Shadowrun would work was if they made it into an MMORPG. I would be happy with that, but I don't really see it working. I mean, you would have the same gold farmers, quest problems, and world annoyances that you do with any other MMO, but in this case you'd have Shadowrun's whiney fans complaining about how every little thing (book covers, for instance) we're correct with thier understanding of Canon.

they made D&D online, and that's got a larger whiner fan base than shadowrun.

The only game I've ever seen that had a whinier fan base than Shadowrun was Vampire. (no offense to anyone here who has played or currently played it, but yeah... weirdness.)

Shadowrunners have the distinction of crying foul at every major gaming concept. Fasa allowed people to write in and send results of thier runs, and people still complained every time they did anything. All the way back from first to second edition (which was nothing but improvements), to the video games (which even I remember there being criticism about- although people seem to revere those games now).. and they're driven thier gaming company out of business.

On top of that, most of the people who complain that Shadowrun needs to be an MMO are comparing it to WoW. with huge guilds, crafting, and no instances. They said it would be better, because you could interrupt runs from other people.  So you would have WoW style interruptions, and would have to sit in S-K buildings waiting for the scientist to respawn so you could take him in.

Oh, and crafting, so you could grind experience making bullets and guns, and crafting tires and hoses out of raw parts... ooh, crafting, the bane of all RPGs and the bread and butter of MMOs. I don't look forward to the thought that there are going to be a hundred runners on the street at any given time- it just seems like Shadowrun works better as an RPG, with no major elements, perhaps working in small groups. Maybe one or two "Main Lobbies" and the rest instanced so I don't have to watch Joe Schmoe grind away experience (karma?) making phat tires for his ride so he can get his craft skill up high enough to make phat tires for airplanes. *shudder*

Sorry, I had to get that out.

I actually like 4th the more I play it.  It'll probably be better when more sourcebooks come out.

The main thing I like is how streamlined it is.  Now when my group plays we don't spend time looking up rules (cuz as a group we could never compromise) since now if we don't know a rule I just eye-ball an attribute + skill and have them tell me how many hits they got.

As far as the SR console I won't play it since I don't have an X-Box.  I might try it out if it gets ported to PC but I was never really into that type of game (kinda like Tribes and Unreal Tournament).  I don't think the game is very Shadowrun-esque but that type of game is what's popular right now (and popular things sell).

But hey, just like KV said it might bring more people into the SR universe and if we support the game they might make more SR titles that are a little more like they should be.  But I'm still not going to buy an X-Box just to try out that game.

BTW, has anyone tried that SR game that was release in Japan years ago?  It was for the Mega CD attachment to the Sega Genesis I think?  I've been wanting to find an emulator or something but I haven't had any luck.

I downloaded the ROM and played it on an emulator.
it was alright. worth stealing, for a couple hours of entertainment I wouldn't pay for it.

oh, and the next version of windows, vista, if you get a 64 bit processer, it'll run all the x-box games. standard.

how do you like them' apples?
