The Davinci Code
« on: May 20, 2006, 05:05:51 AM »

Well, I read this book before I knew it was gonna be a movie and I liked it then. Last night I went and saw it at the movies and still liked it. There were very few changes and any change they made had no effect whasoever on the story. The funniest part was the old lady standing outside the theater stopping people who were going into the movie. Too bad she didn't stop us, we would have had some fun with her :)

I went to see "Art School Confedential" last night and and a group of people with signs were standing next to the movie theater near a vacant lot. Well we thought they were protesting whatever building was being built on that lot since it was between two already large buildings and had a construction sign in front of it. SO we looked over at them, asked ourselves "what the hell is with the protesters" and then went and watched our film. It wasn't until we were leaving in the car that we happened to see the word "Lord" on one of the signs and realized that these morons were boycotting the Devinci Code and trying to get others not to see it as well.

I have to say, some people are so fraggin' stupid that it almost makes me weep. However, I still intend to red the book now, since it has started all this retarded Christian Right stupidity. I will, however, wait for the DVD to see the actual movie.

I honestly don't get the angst. So what if Jesus was married, ain't it the messege we're supposed to run with, not the yes or no factor on a wife?

I also never got why the RC church insisted that Mary and Joseph lived their lives celibate - Bible even mentions James as Jesus brother who was the head of the church in Jeruselam.  Can't have a brother without at least one shared parent, right?  Modern family dynamics notwithstanding....

Yeah... people are kind of sheltered that way.

Technically James was Jesus' half-brother. (You know, with Diety on one side of the family and all)

Some of the fluff from Da Vinci code comes from a book called "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" which makes some pretty unflattering accusations about the Christian faith. Da Vinci Code was even close enough to the message of that book that the authors of it tried to sued for eleventy-billion dollars. But they lost. And the author of the Da Vinci code, I heard he swims around in a big vault of money like Scrooge McDuck.

Anyway, the book (Holy Blood, Holy Grail) accuses early christians of taking Mary Magdaline (who some purport is the wife of christ), while she was pregnant, and hiding her among the germanic tribes of europe, because it conflicted with thier whole 'Jesus is Lord, much better than us normal people' thing. So Jesus has a bloodline in Europe, and all of his descendants have been hidden (killed?) by the catholic church.

Or something like that. Hopefully someone around here is an expert, and can correct anything I said wrong.

Funny thing is, the whole 'Holy Virgin'-thing didn't become an element/issue until around 300 AD, according to historians, IIRC.

Yeah... they came up with a lot of stuff then.
Second Council of Nicean, if I remember correctly?

That was also when they organized the order of the books in the bible- taking the books the Apostle John wrote out of order. (Since John wrote his gospel, Revelations, and then his epistles to the saints... but they wanted that kick with 'add to or take away' at the end)

Actually, the New Testament is organized first by what type of book it is (Gospel, Letters, etc.), then by length.  Since Revelations is considered a book of prophecy, it doesn't 'belong' in the same section as the Gospels or the Letters.

"They actually put it at the end because they liked the kicker of 'whomsoever shall add to this book shall have the plagues added unto him. Whomsoever shall take away from this book shall have thier names taken out of the book of life."

I'm mormon, so I hear that one A LOT.

ok now heres something i went and seen the movie..which was great...throws all of what i was taught as a child was almost a lie...yes now i know it was pagons that was the frist religion and then christains who thought they were all that and killed anyone who spoke their own minds...who cares if jesus had a wife and a child...means he did live a normal life cuz you dont read about his life when he was a teen to when he started profizing...gave a lot of people rights to kill under christs name...yes jesus was the son of god but hes not god...he was born to a mortal woman...which in my eyes makes him half mortal...nothng more nothing less then when others found out about him thats when the wars started ....hard to find out whats right or wrong cuz in this case dont believe there is a right or wrong....but now i want to read the books they have about this and the main book itself would be nice to learn someone elses outlook on it other then those who believe they are right  :o

the book was good too. I read it during the whole hurricane katrina thing before I knew it was gonna be a movie. The book and the movie are very close. The book has more history in it though adn talks more about the free masons than they did in the movie
