Odd Little Movies
« on: May 04, 2011, 09:13:06 AM »

Okay, I'm starting a list of offbeat movies that may not have been in the mainstream but are worth a look anyway. Feel free to contribute. Today's offering:

Assassin in Love
(AKA The Baker)
Really quirky little British comedy. The exploding ram really caught our attention.
Stars Damian Lewis who did such a great job as Winters in Band of Brothers.

I can't say that I've heard of it but sometimes my access to movies are limited in Japan. However, I'll take a look.

I did see an underplayed movie a while back called Waiting....

It's a comedy with Ryan Reynolds and Justin Long about being waiters in a restaurant chain. It's got a star-filled cast even though it was not very big but it's quite funny and will make you laugh if you need one.

Waiting... was a fun movie.

If you're into Kung Fu movies, Ip Man is a good one.  It's based on the real-life struggles of Ip Man, sometimes spelled/pronounced as Yip Man, the fore father of modern Wushu.  He taught Bruce Lee!

I liked Ninja Assassin. Wasn't in theaters very long but I thought it was worth buying.

I just convinced my wife to come see Dylan Dog: Dead of Night. It's a quirkly little horror movie, based on a comic of the same name. It has Brandon Routh and Sam Waterson, and it was a lot of fun to watch. It's more Army of Darkness than Nightmare on Elm Street, but I enjoyed it.

Wild Target
I really liked this odd little movie.  It starred Bill Nighy and Rupert Grint (yes, that Rupert Grint) and it was about a hitman who falls for his target, then picks up a stray.  Not going to give details but it's weird and amusing. Loved the hitman's mom....

In my ongoing quest to amuse myself I present Office Uprising.
Oh, this is an undiscovered gem, gents.  Apparently released on the Sony streaming service it's the tale of a slacker working in a weapons firm that for some reason developed an energy drink, and of course said drink turns consumers into chemical psychotics bent on murder and conquest.
Good cast (check out Mr Nusbaum!), light, fast, completely brainless script that is quite a lot of fun.

Dammit! I so want this to be a feature film, so my kind of thing,  but what we got is a 15 minute short...No Rest for the Wicked — A Basil and Moebius Adventure
Now, I suppose I have to go read the graphic novels instead.

Not usually my style but was intriguing. Appreciate the suggestion and look forward to the next.

Well, I have several :)  I rather liked Byron for its weirdness, but then I quite like this one, too,  I like animated:  https://vimeo.com/273262257
