Real life cybernetics
« on: May 20, 2011, 05:44:49 PM »

Here's a few interesting articles involving electrical/mechanical systems and the human body (i.e. cyberware!):

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-13273348
2 stores of 2 men who lost the use of one of their hands chose to have it amputated and replaced with a bionic one.

Implanted electrodes into the spine of a paraplegic man allow him to stand and walk on a treadmill (with some assistance, for limited amounts of time).

The one about the hand is the more interesting one - enough that I'm worried it's a hoax.
Anyone been able to find corroboration for it?

The second story, transmitted nerve signals, builds on research I knew to exist. Some years ago, I attended a presentation by a man who did exactly that kind of research, though at that stage only on animals. He had yet to figure out how to limit the pain from his implant, which was a step he insisted on taking before even proposing to use it in a human context.

if it's hoax, it's a very well-planted one.

That's pretty awesome- I love seeing the technology imagined 25 years ago coming into real life.

I need a cyberdeck wired to my brain!
