... help?
« on: February 29, 2012, 05:10:16 PM »

Sooo... I have a job working down at Zion National park in utah as a dish washer..  Which is cool cause its work, and zion is suppose to be awesome (i have no idea, closest i've gotten was playing the Fallout New Vegas addon, and i doubt they have giant irradiated geckos and bears and all..)...

Except my pay is crap. 7.50 an hour, and they take 400 out of every pay check to pay for my room (which i share with several other people who also pay 400 a month. and we get none of this back like at crater lake..)

And as such.. I need something to help me from going on an insane rampage because of shitty job.. I dont suppose any of you chummers know any on-line games for Unhallowed Metropolis, Exalted, or Warhammer (dark heresy or Rogue trader), being run on MIRC, forum, or whatever.. Looking for players...?

Are you just playing civilian grunt with this job or are you actually a seasonal ranger (visitor use assistant, whatever)  Seriously, if it's the former, get busy with the seasonal application, it's salaried and although the reward for good work is usually more work, at least you can switch to a new park every 6 months until you find the one you like....

im working for the company that rents the property from NPS and has no actual connection to it.. As a dishwasher. last season i made it to a lead position, but they fired me becaus ei took a slice of pizza from the employee dining room, which they said i could (but nothing written saying that) at the end of the season when they usually start looking to let people go to save on costs..

Up to that point they hadn't fired a guy who had multipule sexual harassment write ups (and not the she took what i said the wrong way, but grabbing and other things.. so much for their zero tolerance policy) kept a cook who tried to hit up the security guard to buy him crystal meth in town, multipule other people who came in durring the night raiding the EDR fridges (which i filed reports on all of them) and plenty of other things..

... And now they hired me back at another location. I know right?

I've applied to NPS, i have a bit of volunteer work with them in the past, but not much else they are looking for in a hire. at least with this job if they really start trying to screw me i can just walk off without losing anything... Kind of... Crater lake i got half the housing cost (200 a month) back completing contract. Now i get nothing back and they are taking out twice as much..

I really do want to find a real damn job...

Well, It's an interesting delema, if nothing else.
I applaud you for finding work in interesting places.
I wonder, sometimes, what it would be like to have a 'less important job'.
Now, I'm not trying to be insulting or say 'neener neener neener my job gives me a gun', but literally, if I screw something up in the operation of my duties, people die. typically in horrible and painful ways.
I know, I signed up for the gig, and be careful what you wish for and all of that. But some days, when I'm standing in a two inch deep puddle of blood, I wonder if I wouldn't be better off having a job where the most important thing I had to worry about was adding soap to water, and trying to avoid the temptation of eating things off of the break-room table.
Part of that, I'm sure, is the grass being greener over the picket fence.
but still:
Beautiful scenery, low responsibility...  *shrug* sounds like a dream retirement spot.

anyways: back to your earlier question:
If you are feeling creative you could start a play-by-post deal here. I'm not familiar with those rule systems, but for a buddy I'd be willing to pick up (*cough*digitallypirate*cough*) a copy and stumble through it.
If you are looking for a whole community of rabid fans, I think that Jester use to play and talk about the game... he would know better than the rest of us I think where to find it's native nesting grounds.
I'm doing some play by post stuff over at mythweavers. I don't recall a specific section for that, but then again, i wasn't really looking for it. Maybe they have something hiding under a 'homebrew' heading?

anyways and anyhow: Good luck.

well.. hehe, i wont admit there are some perks.. But heres the full story before people start leaving their jobs...

Unless you have your own trailer, kiss privacy goodbye. You share a room with 3-4 other people, some might not even speak english, are heavy alcoholics, work vastly different hours then you, are drug users, or often forget which bed is theirs when they bring drunken girl back for mounting and simply fall in which ever beds closest. even if your already asleep on said bed. no seperaters, and the room is not that big.
And if you complain they try and make it look like your doing something wrong, and if you report the drug users to NPS the other employees treat you like a pariah and Xanterra will look for a chance to can you ASAP.

Your pay is as low as Xanterra can do it, as im going to utah im getting federal minium, so 7.50 an hour with 40 hour weeks, pay checks come bi-weekly, and each paycheck they take out 200 bucks so 400 bucks a month in rent (from each person in the room). And since your "low responsibility" your "Highly expendable" for the most part they wont fire you for alot of things (we had a guy kick in the doors in the dorm looking for his sister screaming at everybody. High off his ass on crystal meth. and he was simply "escorted from the property" ... the next morning. they drove him into town, gave him his check, and dropped him off at the grey hound. Others come into work drunk or high, slack off, or so forth with no repercussions and as the stable worker YOU have to pick up the slack.

And if by chance they choose to fire you, they will do it at moment notice, pull you to office, give you the papers, and tell yo you have 2 hours to pack and GTFO before they call NPS who are more then happy to kick your ass out and/or arrest you if they can. (alot of employees make bad impressions with them, so they kinda assume it on all employees)

And the seasonal work actually kind works towards killing most job applications as it leads people to believe you cant hold a job longer then that.

As a retirement plan...? *shrugs* I'd say go with zones idea and try applying to NPS, they love getting retired police/military people who just kinda want to relax and like the out doors. A high number of nerds (i actually ran a shadowrun game with them which was pretty awesome) and if not dealing with the xanterra employees (but should be ok if you made a good impression on them like i managed to some how) are pretty laid back and fun to hang with.

As for games.. Im looking to join a game.. I've tried to run several, but they.. just didnt work falling apart for one reason or another.. I've still got some ideas for Unhallowed (actually have a small forum up for it.. http://unhallowed.freeforums.org/index.php if curious, heh) and dark heresy and such, but wanna just kinda take some time and get it refined a little more, and actually get the chance to really play ya know..?

Again I suggest the seasonal thing, not to mention that many seasonals can wangle a full time gig eventually...if not as a Ranger specifically perhaps as a Visitor Use Assistant or one of the other wage slave designations :) I've worked with full time Rangers that are total assholes and seasonals who are gems, have you gone over to the usajobs website, you can search regions, or DOI departments, so you can do Fish and Wildlife or NPS or BLM etc...The nice thing about getting a federal job is that you pretty much can't get fired unless you commit an actual crime.  Plus once you're in you do begin to rack up decent sick and vacation time.  Retirement is fairly minimal unless you pitch in, and there are always more chiefs than Indians to be non-PC about it, but it's better than a sharp stick in the eye
