In response to the post about The Terminus Experiment, yes they grafted the cyberware before infecting them. And yes obviously not all of it went as planned. But the key point of the research was not using one single strain of the virus, but developing a specific strain that would allow for the installation of cyberware.
This happens to be one of my favorite Shadowrun Novels. And if you are curious about just how possible it is, just PM me and I'll let you know what the end result was, I'd hate to spoil anything for you future readers of this great novel.
But I tell you, there were some strange and yet very logical explainations to the possibility to it, and in one MAJOR instance somebody possessing magical attributes without knowing it made for an interesting side effect.
