You know, there's a technology that was developed that's called IEEE 802.11G (A.K.A. 54MBps wireless ethernet).  Means there's no long cable for people to trip over

yeah, that's been considered, but for some reason my house (which is actually pretty small) creates wierd wireless dead zones.  We've tried 2 different routers, on a buslink (puke) and one linksys.  Both of them were 802.11 B protocol.  I was still limited as to where in my room upstairs I could have the wireless reciever. 

what's the average cost of what you're recommending?  Christmas is coming up, after all (Mischievous grin).

the G series routers run about $100. you'd have to get a wireless card for your PC too though, so that'd be another $30 or so.
also, if you find that you have 'dead zones' you can create a series of wireless repeaters to light up the dark spots...

for about $80 a pop. just plug them in in an area with good service, and it'll expand it from that point.
(you could probably do the same thing with the B series, typically for about 10-20 newyen less a hop.)

well, for now, the cable works fine... I wouldn't trust my mother to configure a router in any intelligent manner, and I know I can't do much better.  At the very least, a cable LAN is pretty hard to screw the pooch on.

I'll think about a WAN when I move out of my apartment.  Any suggestions on a good WEP encryption protocol?

0 encryption gives you better deniablety when the FEDS come knocking on your door.
and I think that's worth a couple of KBPS to your neighbors.
