I was told "semi 8th" after my test.  Basically 9th and partway good enough for the next test.

But I'm happy.  The test wasn't nearly as nerve-wracking as everyone seemed to make it out as.

What was the test like?

Practice some kata? Live sparring?

Or complete a written exam, while escaping from a cage above a shark pond, while your fellows broke concrete blocks on your skull with hand sledges?

Let me guess though, the test was kihon (basic moves), a single kata and very basic kumite (not so much combat as... pre-combat, to learn about distance etc.), right?

Got it, ROOTless.  My kumite was moving forward with 3 punches to the head, moving backward blocking the same, forward 3 punches to the chest, and backwards blocking.

hehe, when I started, I kept forgetting which foot to step back with on the blocks.

Not quite.  Instead of the kicks, it's punches to the chest.  There was someone testing for 7th, and since she and I came to training the most regularly (it's a small class), we often practiced kumite together.

My brother, a friend, I used golf clubs and crocquet mallets against a tree once.  Got into a bit of trouble with the parents with that one.

My brothers and I used to swordfight with sticks. And if you got hit in the arm, that arm was unusable. Same for the legs. It all escalated into a bunch of torso trying to stab each other with sticks in their mouths. . .
