hahahaha... so apparently I'm not the only one who realized that the middle ages were commanded by a bunch of armless and legless fiends?

Yeah... my brothers and I started using PVC pipe with padding to make swords- so we could swing harder at each other before my mom would start yelling at us.

They still really hurt. But they didn't look like they did.

I do like swords. I have a collection. But in Illinois, it is illegal to sell edged weapons longer than approximately eight inches in length. So all my family can get me is cheap, Indian and Pakistani blades. Decorative only. No edge, and even if it did, it'd break on the first swing.

I wish I had a kendo-stick, or any practice or practical sword!

I've got a bokken (sp?), a viking replica (blunted), and have made several of the PVC/foam/ducktape swords.  Even made a quarterstaff out of the stuff once. (Home Depot: not just for home improvement)

hehe.  I think I spent a couple hours at least cutting down the PVC using the saw on my Leatherman.  The foam was much easier.

I have a shinai ("kendo stick") from when I did kendo, and a bokken, which I try to use regularly (kenjutsu). When I get some money again, I plan to gt hold of a Iaito, for which I do have a permit (though it might need an update, have to check).

what's an Iaito? I'm pretty familiar with alot of japanese weapons, but never heard of that. And I do have more swrods. Most are fake, like the 2 longswords and katana. But I have a real full tangue(sp?) Ninja-to and a real WWII british bayonet my grandpa brought back with him.

I have an actual Civil War saber, but it's really nothced and in bad shape. I keep it around because for some reasone, the textured grip fits my hand PERFECTLY. It's like the knuckle grips were molded for my hand. It's just wierd enough so that I hang onto it. Other than that, I have a Marine Core saber (sharpened) and several show-swords (so blunt you could beat someone to death with the blade before having to cut them with a pair of scisors) and a bunch of various knives laying around.

Gabriel (one of these days I'm gonna cut myself...)

what's an Iaito? I'm pretty familiar with alot of japanese weapons, but never heard of that.

A Iaito is basically a metal practice sword (katana), most of them made recently, used if iai (sword drawing) practice. Typically they are not sharp, and aren't of a too high quality, which means that they can be bought with reasonable money (not the blood of your first born children), and can actually be used for practice purposes (drawing, cutting and re-sheathing), without worrying about destroying an antique.

Examples of iai-kata form Katori shinto kenjutsu. The page also has links to a few other groups of kata (bo, naginata and basic sword). With the exception of the naginata ones (of which I know 2), I know all of those show (in one of the styles, some of them are shown in 2 styles), though only one side of the last of each bo and sword.

Sometimes I feel that I'll be needing one to get much better at iai (-jutsu).
Ofcourse, I may well be (very) wrong. Especially since I still tend to mess up Happoken.
