The problem has (appearantly) been solved. Even the one in the Linux partition (which took him about 5-10 minuttes, as compared to the several hours for the windows partition).

Hey, if it was bug free, they couldn't do years of updates...

it's kind of like expecting a used car salesman to tell you the truth, isn't it? I mean, they make this stuff so your computer can run- not long or well, just at all.

*shrug* any application expected to work with a thousand diffrent applications each manufactured to a diffrent set of standards written by a diffrent group of people, is bound to be difficult.
the more it does, the more complex it is.
unix is easyer and more stable, but it's also more sheltered. you have to know what you are doing, and there is a limited selection of software out there for it. windows on the other hand is the largest most used and abused system that's out there.
personally, i think they do okay for what they have to deal with.

of cource, it's easyer to just say they suck.

Thanks, Ruski. You're the first person I've heard with a well thought out opinion. So many just make up childish names to mock it, ignoring the herculean effort it takes to even do half of what Windows XP can do. In reality, it's amazing how stable and fluid Windows XP is, with how far along they've gotten, in security, stability, performance, ease of use, and even creating new graphical abilities with Direct X, among others. Heck, look at the price of it! At roughly $70 for Home Edition on NewEgg.com, it's little more than a new videogame. For an entire operating system! Hard to complain.

And Ingo, you don't pay for Microsoft products in protest? Protest against what? Their ability to profit from their work? And why the heck are you using them? ??? Is the irony really that severe, or was that a joke?

Hehe a joke mostly, but I don't like the prices they charge for their product.  And I like free stuff. ;)

At my work Office 2003 Professional OEM is $345!  Even the basic one which only has the 4 basic programs is over $200 or something.

I thought it was really kewl when they released Office Student & Teacher edition and Office Professional Academic Edition.  The exact same product, licensed for use on multiple computers and an awesome price.

In any case WinXP is a decent operating system.  The only problem is that it is so widely used that many unscrupulous people find different ways to break into it, thus making it unsafe to store important information on your PC (unless the right precautions are taken).  I really want to use Linux, I even have RedHat 9 Pro, I just haven't had the time to installing it on my other machine.  It has come a long way but it still doesn't have the support it should have.  Which brings me to a question...actually I'll make a new thread.

You know, Ani, I can only agree with you to a certain extent. I think MS has done a fairly good job creating the Windows family of operating systems, but I think they have fallen short of thier own press. When all is siad and done, if the program doesn't work right, or consistantly right, then it is a failed program. I know that opens me up to all kinds of flames, but the proof, as they say, is in the pudding. Do I use Windows? Of course; what the hell else am I supposed to use? Do I think Windows has a ton of glitches? Hell yes! I crash programs all the time just by running a few at a time. But by the same token, I spend a pretty good amount of time on the PC, and I like using it. I upgrad every few years to keep as current as my buget allows. And I will probably upgrade in a year or so again. Take all of this for what you will.
