*grin* i have broadband, ... i don't think that i've even looked at what e-mail or storage options i have.
*shrug* it's all about the bandwidth for me.

-RuskiFace the Pirate

I hear ya on that, all I wanted was cheap broadband.  All this other stuff is just perks they threw in that I didn't even know about (for a year and a half no less)

sounds good to me. A new thread will work fine. I have my ISP hosting me. Free webspace rocks :)

Err Jester unless you're ISP is free, that's not free...(It just usually comes with the package)

I have to pay for webspace and it's really small if I want it. Doesn't come extra for me.....deng.

How much is everybody paying approx for their services? I'm just curious if I have everyone beat since I live in Japan. ;)

Mine is about the same as Ruski's, only my parents pay for the cable too. (Extra $30 a month?)

I have DSL.  384kbps to 1.5Mbps down, 128kbps to 384kbps up.
Of course since it's DSL the speed depends upon how far I am from their routing station.  In average I get about 700-900kbps down and 250-300 kpbs up.

My dad pays $24.95 a month.  We get file hosting (110MB, but can't build a website on it), and unlimited photo storage (or so they say, I should upload 50 million 1MB pics and find out).

Pretty neat package, but I'd much rather have broadband cable speeds, especially since I download so much crap.

I pay for my internet connection as part of the rent, which unfortunatly means that although the line out is pretty good, I have to share it with far too many others.
If I get online when they sleep or whatever, and the connection is actually up, it's a pretty decent connection (though I haven't a clue how good), otherwise, it sucks.

But essentially it's free. (The rent wouldn't be any lower if I didn't use it.)

you should modify the permissions on the router to set your self up as the primary channel. that way, no matter how many people are on, you alwies get the best connection speed, and theirs just really really start to suck.

I have cable and they are making upgrades all the time. I don't get any webspace with my service and I pay approx (after the conversion of course) about $65 a month. I like mine service and honestly what slows me down is other people sometimes. I used to get a bit faster in one of my old connections but this one suits my needs just fine. I'm not a huge movie downloader and I can wait a min or two for songs so it's fine. But here is my transfers. I really don't understand the huge difference or why it varies so much. The biggest thing that bothers me is the email space which is low but it increasing in about 5 days, since I use it for work then I get big files, etc. but I have 6MB with an increase to 10MB in five days, etc..well, that is mine. Unless I messed up on something.

Down for me is = 43Mbps

Up for me is = 1Mbps

Basically, I wanted to see if I'm close to paying the same amount as you guys but it seems to me that cable is still not as wide spread as I was lead to believe. I think I'm getting a fair price now but let's hear some opinions.

it's all about compatition.

if you have two providers for high speed internet access, haggle.

call one up, say you were looking at their competator, get their price.
call the other one up, and say that you have a price for the other guy, but you would be willing to switch if you got a better deal.
call up the original guy, ask to speak to a manager, or shift supervisor, or whatever, explain that you are doing comparison shopping for your friends, and that currently the best price offered was their competator, and give them the amount, say that you like their service more, but it all comes down to the almighty dollar, and unless he gives you a special rate you'll have to recomend their competator.

that should get you down arround $20/month if you make all your charisma checks.

if you don't have any compatition in the area, find out where else your provider provides for, and find compatition in that area, and give them the run arround (they may not know that you are in a monopoly zone)
same ending, but barganing from a posistion of less power typically yealds worse results.

Nice try........ but Japan doesn't work like that.....if you don't want to pay the price then go somewhere else or just don't have internet access.

If it did work like that then we would have done that long ago but Internet Service is just something that you can't bargain with here. :'(

*shrug* i dunno, lots of people think that very same way about stuff here. just because it's got a price tag printed on it dosn't mean you can't haggle.

just means you have to be more charming about it.

*shrug* go ahead and try though. it's not like they'll shut down your access out of spite, and you may save a couple of bucks.
