well, equipment is all usefull, and most of it is nice to have in a pinch. but typically, being unencumbered is more valuable than being able to camp wherever you may suddenly feel the need to. (a length of rope would have worked just as good as your tent, and would have weighed a fraction of what your pavalion did, and a sleeping bag? in seattle? you'd be better off carrying an extra cred stick with 25Y on it for a coffin motel. they'd be easyer to find than a place to pitch a tent and camp anyways)
but that's just me.
your guy is quite the boyscout, so perhaps it's in his nature to be ready to go on a week long camping trip into the Tir at the drop of a hat...
