If I got to play but since it has been 5 years since I played last then I don't have many questions.

YOu don't need to be a rules buff to comment on the rules. Hell, most of the time I talk rruels, it's to bitch about how FP mucked something up. So just feel free to interject. ;)

so, here's a rule question about padding:

how much padding can a charichter wear in the form of impact body armor before it starts to have dire consaquences... and what you you players do to discourage your PC's from walking arround looking like a dunlop tire?

I'm not sure about how much you can wear, but I know it is based on your Body score. I think 2 times the body sccore, but I am not sure. As for them layering the armor all over the place, just use common sense. I mean who wear a bulletproof vest under an armored jacket under a lied coat? And if you can't appeal to common sense, have Lone Star stop them and haul them in for suspected "conseracy to comit armed robbery" or some such drek. After all, if you look like you are ready for serious drek, odds are you are going to be STARTING serious drek.

i had a vauge idea that it had something to do with being less than your quickness... does it have something to do with your body as well?

something like: "if it's less than your quickness, it's okay, but if it's more you get a +1 to all your target numbers for every point over your quickness"

or something like that.

According to the rules, the amount of armor worn before penalties incrue is linked to Quickness.

I assume you know how armor layering works, where the highest value each of Ballistic and Impact is used, followed by half of the second highest (round down). For the purposes of encumberance this second (and any subsequential) layer is not halved.

For every 2 points of either Ballistic or Impact armor that exceeds the character's Quickness incurs a penalty of -1 Combat Pool and -1 dice to Quickness-related skills.

Form Fitted Body Armor does not count for the purposes of determining Quickness penalties.

Let's say Joe-Bob Hillbilly has a Quickness of 4. He can wear an Armor Jacket [5/3] with no penalty, and could even add FFBA. If Joe-Bob wanted to wear Armor Clothes [3/0] with his Armor Jacket, he would lose 2 from his CP and be at -2 dice from any quickness-linked skill like firing guns and being sneaky (5/3 + 3/0 = 8/3 for encumberance purposes].

is it the ballistic AND the impact armor that you cut in half for each layer after the first... i thought you just added up the impact armor...

For the purpose of determinig Armor value, you divide any subsequent layer by 2 (round down), be that Ballistic or Impact.

For example, the aformentioned hick Joe-Bob puts on FFBA [4/1], Armored Clothing [3/1], his Armor Jacket [5/3], a helmet [+2/+1], and a set of forearm guards [+0/+1].

His Armor rating would be 10/5 [5 + 4/2 (=2) + 3/2 (=0) + 2 + 1]. Armors with a '+' add their rating directly to Armor without halving. (This takes for granted that you let any armor other than the first count as protection, Some GMs don't because of the ambiguous wording of the rules.)

As for encumberance, it would be 10/6. He would lose a total of 4 Combat Pool dice, and would be at -4 dice to any Quickness-linked skills.

Fortunately the Physad ability of Spirit armour doesn't mess with any of those rules so you just add a straight 2 to Impact armour  :)

As does Armor from Bone Lacing, Dermal Sheath or Plating, the Armor spell, Cyberlimb mods, Orthoskin, etc.

Some of these do count as weight though, but none for the specific purpose of armor encumberance penalties.

Like I said, my favorite combination is Form-Fitting Body Armor, and a Lined Coat. That gives you a 6/4. And since I use hit locations in my game, it gives you a 6/4 everywhere accept the head. Damn nice protection.
