He gets shot while in hand-cuffs trying to protect a police officer. No shield, no mask.

Yeah- he's a hero- it's not his fault the writers came up with this dumb storyline.

Of course Marvel doesn't exactly have a reputation for extracting itself well from difficult storylines. Just look at Spiderman's "Clone Saga," if you don't know what I mean.

Spiderman Clone Saga = three different writers with no clear reason or exit strategy.

I mean, even hardcore Spiderman fans were like "Wait, what the hell is happening?"

And then they actually changed the story, and said that even though Peter was the clone, that Ben Reily was the clone. You know, because. Because we said so.

Again I was never really into comics, although I did buy the 3 Darkman comics that came out after the movie, but that was about it.

Well, I would LOVE to see Marvel actually stick by a change. Just once. That's all I'm asking.

They've been living by Stan Lee's decree since the 70s. Why would they change now?

Well, sooner or later they will have to change that sentiment. It's just as simple as supply and demand. The fans are getting to a point where they want realistic storylines (at least as realistic as you can get with comics) and sooner or later Marvel will have to deliver or be left behind.

Uhhh... Marvel is sticking to a younger fan base, and younger fan bases don't want great storylines. They want more of the same, generic storylines pandering to thier tastes.

I mean, they put Spiderman on MTV. I don't even watch MTV anymore. Of course, I don't read spiderman comics anymore either, but hey... I guess they're just going for younger audiences.

If they target a new group of kids every five or ten years, they won't ever need to update thier comics storylines. They'll just get a new generation through the turnstile, and then start over.

You don't read a lot of comics, do you? The comic industry as a whole has begun to pay much more attention to old comic book fans. Someone finally figured out that when a kid starts collecting at age 11, he has different taste than when he is collecting at age 31. He is also still interested in collecting comics, but won't unless those same comics change with him as he ages.

Look at the "Ultimate" line of Marvel books where the most famous characters were restarted from scratch in order top update them and make them more "realistic" to an older audiance. The Ultimates is the besty example of how that worked.

Then there is the Marvel Max imprint, focusing on a much more adult-themed universe. Garth Ennis has written for that imprint on several occasions, and anyone who ever read an issue of Preacher knows how Garth Ennis writes.

But the undelying fact still remains: Marvel is unwilling and unable to change anything in their main continuity books. And it is a flaw in thier system.
