Lovecraft and Howard

I was recently reading about Robert E. Howard and H.P. Lovecraft, and how apparently they argued back and forth in letters about barbarism vs. civilization.

Howard (the author of Conan the Barbarian) argued that all men are naturally barbarians, and that civilization is artificial.

Lovecraft argued that barbaric forces are precedent to the fall of every great civilization. His books are filled with nameless chaotic horrors who bring about the fall of men and women.

I was curious what each of your thoughts were.

It depends on a person's definition of 'civilization.'  We refer to the Incan and Mayan civilizations, and yet they exhibited 'barbaric' behaviors, such as human sacrifice, etc.  They exist in tandem, and I think to say that one trumps or undermines the other is to compartmentalize things a little too much.

Well, let's see.  I fell asleep during Arnold Schwarzenegger's Conan the Barbarian, and have never read Lovecraft (save his theories on Horror and Supernatural Elements of Literature, which was way to freakin' pompous).  So.  Nyah.   :P

Don't let "logic" and "facts" confuse you. That's just a cover story to obfusicate the true nature of the abyssal horror that eventually consumed Lovecraft as it torn his sanity asunder from beyond time and space. . .
